The Association of Drainage Authorities and the Wildlife Conservation Partnership have released species action plans for Barn Owl (Tyto alba) and Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) on the ADA website which we hope will aid Internal Drainage Boards as they work towards producing IDB Biodiversity Action Plans (IDB BAPs) by the March 2010 deadline. The guidance discusses the habitat and nesting needs for both species and the importance of drainage channels as wildlife corridors. It provides a simple checklist of targets, actions and indicators of success which IDBs can use when planning maintenance and capital works.
The Wildlife Conservation Partnership (http://www.wheathampstead.net/wcp/) has worked with ADA and IDBs across Lincolnshire since the late 1980s. ADA is very grateful for their recent contribution to the IDB Biodiversity Workshop at Natural England's York office on the 24 November. Delegates felt the workshop was a very useful event for IDBs with talks on European Eel conservation measures, successfully seeking funding for IDB conservation projects, providing ponds alongside drainage operations, Lincolnshire coastal grazing marsh, and delivering BAPs through capital works.
Presentations from the day are now available to download from the ADA website (see Seminars and Conference Presentations section of the 'Downloads' page).
Our thanks to the Environment Agency, JBA, Lindsey Marsh Drainage Board, Middle Level Commissioners, Million Ponds Project, Somerset Consortium of Drainage Boards, Water Management Alliance, and Wildlife Conservation Partnership for presenting at the event and Natural England for providing a venue.
