17/06/2010 - ADA Chief Executive Jean Venables honoured with a CBE
The Association of Drainage Authorities is proud to announce that its Chief Executive, Dr Jean Venables, was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List on Saturday, following her distinguished service as President of the Institution of Civil Engineers 2008-9. This follows her MBE in 1997 for Services to Civil Engineering and her OBE in 2004 for services to flood defence. Jean is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of ICE, Member of CIWEM and Fellow of the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Jean VenablesAs ADA Chief Executive, Jean leads a growing team of staff and works closely with many volunteers from amongst ADA's members – especially Association Chairman Henry Cator OBE DL – to represent members to government and others, and to provide a range of services to members to assist them in their vital work.

A major recent representational activity has been participation in the Pitt Review following the 2007 floods, leading to the consultation on and influencing role during the passage of the Flood & Water Management Bill in the last Parliament, to become the Flood & Water Management Act 2010.

Jean's major theme during her ICE Presidential Year was climate change – and especially the need for both mitigation of CO2 emissions and adaptation to the predicted effects, and the crucial role of engineers and related disciplines in delivering both. ADA's members are at the forefront of dealing with day-to-day water level management, the seemingly increasing number of extreme rainfall events and rising sea levels.

Recognition of the contribution of its Chief Executive in this way will strengthen ADA's voice with government and the many other organisations involved. ADA and its members will continue to improve local communities, businesses and the environment by effective land drainage, and flood risk to people, buildings, infrastructure, industry and agriculture through effective water level management and flood risk management.
