Over the last 15 years, researchers at the University of Hull have collaborated with the Environment Agency on the REDEEM Project: Research & Development of fish & Eel Entrainment Mitigation at pumping stations.
Phases One and Two of REDEEM have investigated fish and eel passage and protection at pumping stations. The overall aim is to provide evidence-based practical, cost-effective mitigation measures that deliver tangible real-world benefits at pumping stations, including legislative compliance.
On 02–03 June 2026, the University of Hull will host the first conference dedicated to pumping stations and fish, sponsored by the Environment Agency. The event is intended to deliver real-world benefits for practitioners, spanning ecologists, asset managers, engineers and policymakers.
The agenda will include:
There will be opportunities to discuss day-to-day challenges and barriers to delivery. Speakers from across Europe and further afield will also contribute, providing opportunities to share knowledge and strengthen collaborative networks. We will also explore remaining evidence gaps, technological developments and future research priorities to be addressed in the forthcoming third phase of REDEEM.
